Catalysis and Organic Synthesis Laboratory

Nitin is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at IISER Bhopal. Nitin obtained his PhD in 2002 from the University of Pune under the guidance of Professor Dilip D. Dhavale. After then, he joined Prof. Christoph Schneider’s group as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Goettingen, Germany. Subsequently, he moved to Tohoku University, Japan, as a JSPS postdoctoral fellow to work with Prof. Yoshinori Yamamoto, where later on he was appointed as an Assistant Professor. He then joined Prof. K. C. Nicolaou’s laboratory, first at ICES in Singapore, and then at The Scripps Research Institute in USA.

In 2008, Nitin began his independent career at CSIR-IICT, Hyderabad. After five years of stay at CSIR-IICT, he moved to the CSIR-NCL, Pune. In July 2017, he joined the Department of Chemistry at IISER Bhopal as an Associate Professor.

Nitin is a synthetic organic chemist with a research focus on homogeneous catalysis. His broad research interests include metal catalysis, organocatalysis, photoredox catalysis, asymmetric catalysis, electrocatalysis, and total synthesis of natural products. Currently, Nitin’s group is intrigued by the unique reactivities of gold complexes and their applications in advancing synthetic methodologies, particularly in the formation of nontrivial C-C and C-X bonds.

He has been the recipient of J. C. Bose National Fellowship, CNR Rao National Prize for Chemical Sciences, SERB Technology Translation Award, SERB Distinguished Investigator Award, CRSI Bronze Medal, INSA Young Scientist Medal. He is the National Representative of IUPAC for the 2024-2025 term. He is a fellow of several prestigious science academies, including the Indian National Science Academy (FNA), the National Academy of Sciences, India (FNASc), and the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), etc.

He serves as the Editor of the Elsevier journal “Tetrahedron Letters” and is a member of the International Advisory Board for the journal “SYNTHESIS”.
